A client recently told me he wanted to replace himself with AI…

Not just use AI for a little help, but literally replace himself. Script it, clone his voice, never sit down at the microphone again.

He’d built a real audience of listeners who tuned in for him, and he was about to hand all of that to a machine and assume nobody would care.

In this episode, I’m sharing exactly what I told him, and why this is one of the fastest ways to destroy something you spent years building.

I’m not anti-AI. I use it daily. However, there’s a difference between AI that helps you and AI that replaces you, and that matters more than most people realize right now.

Today’s episode includes:

  • Why an audience built on your personality can’t be handed over to AI.
  • How listeners sense something is wrong before they can even identify what it is.
  • The newsletter that lost thousands of subscribers overnight due to AI outsourcing.
  • Why years of accumulated trust can be destroyed with a single decision.
  • What happens when platforms can’t reliably detect AI despite asking for disclosure.
  • Why growing scrutiny around AI content is changing what audiences expect.
  • The question worth asking if you’d rather not appear on your own show.
  • Why AI-generated video won’t replace being recognized as a real person.
  • How genuine human connection becomes more valuable as AI content multiplies.
  • What actually separates your show from everything else competing for attention.

Questions This Episode Answers

Can I use an AI voice for my podcast?

You can, but it undermines the reason most people listen in the first place. Voice cloning has become convincing enough that many listeners won’t consciously identify what’s different—they’ll simply feel that something is off and stop connecting with the show. If you’ve built an audience around your perspective and personality, substituting a synthetic version is a trade of long-term trust for short-term convenience. Voice is one of the few things in podcasting that can’t be replicated by a competitor, which makes it a strange asset to give up. If the goal is saving time, there are far better places to apply AI.

Is it okay to use AI to help make my podcast?

For most of the production process, yes. Using AI to outline episodes, organize your thinking, draft show notes, speed up editing, or handle repetitive tasks is widely accepted and rarely bothers anyone. The objection arises when AI stops assisting you and starts replacing you—generating the opinions, writing the script you never read, or speaking in a cloned version of your voice. The distinction listeners care about isn’t whether AI touched the episode, but whether a real person is still behind what’s being said. Tools that make you faster are fine. Tools that make you absent are the problem.

Do I need to disclose if my podcast uses AI?

Increasingly, yes, and it’s worth being aware of where this is heading. Major platforms have introduced self-declaration requirements for AI-generated content, and regulators in some regions have begun legislating around disclosure and misleading audiences. Enforcement remains inconsistent, largely because detection is unreliable, so much of this still depends on creators declaring it themselves. Beyond compliance, there’s a practical case for transparency: audiences respond badly to discovering they were misled, and that reaction tends to be more damaging than any disclosure would have been. Check the current rules for your platforms and region, since this area is changing quickly.

Do I need to be on video to grow a podcast?

It isn’t strictly required, but it makes promotion considerably easier. Audio-only clips rarely perform well on social platforms, where video is what stops someone scrolling and lets them recognize you. That said, generating a synthetic version of yourself isn’t a workaround—an artificial presenter doesn’t create the familiarity that makes video worth doing. If appearing on camera genuinely isn’t for you, it’s more effective to build the show around audio and find other promotional approaches than to publish something that reads as inauthentic to the audience you’re trying to attract.

How do I make my podcast stand out now that there’s so much AI content?

By being more identifiably human, not less. As the volume of generated content rises, audiences have grown suspicious enough that they now accuse genuinely human work of being artificial. In that environment, the things AI can’t convincingly reproduce become your advantage: specific opinions, real experience, a distinctive way of speaking, and a willingness to say something others won’t. Competing on volume is a losing strategy, because anything produced at scale can be matched at scale. What can’t be matched is the accumulated trust of an audience that knows there’s a particular person behind the show.
